Winter-Proof Sonoma Wineries
Our beloved Sonoma County doesn’t — thankfully — experience the ice and snow and way-way-way-below-freezing temperatures our friends in the Sierras “enjoy” every winter. (Hey, to each their own.)
But Sonoma is no San Diego either. Winter low temperatures typically bottom out in the 30s, frost is relatively common especially in upland valleys and canyons, and harder freezes aren’t unheard-of. Sure, the average afternoon high in December and January is a “balmy” 55 degrees or so, but that’s still jacket weather where we come from.
Oh, and winter is the rainy season here. So there’s that.
Fortunately for our guests, the Roche Winery family has gotten the memo about winter in Sonoma — we’ve lived here for decades, after all — and we’re proud to offer a truly “winter-proof” tasting experience indoors and out. So do some of our favorite neighbors in Sonoma and beyond.
These are our favorite winter-proof Sonoma wineries for cold-season tastings. Even if you’re set on an outdoor experience.
Roche Winery (Downtown Sonoma Tasting Room and Main Winery Tasting Room)
At Roche Winery, we believe in exceeding our guests’ high expectations. That’s why we offer two winter-proof Sonoma winery experiences: one at our downtown Sonoma tasting room and one at our production facility just outside town. Neither location requires reservations, and walk-in availability is a bit better when it’s chilly outside, but we do still encourage you to reserve your tasting in advance if possible (particularly if you’re traveling with a larger group).
What can you expect once you arrive? Both locations have cozy, well-heated indoor tasting areas with spacious bars. If you prefer a heated outdoor tasting experience, both locations have tented outdoor spaces with plenty of room for couples and larger groups alike. Venture outside the tent at our main production facility and you’ll find two outdoor fireplaces to keep you warm; our downtown Sonoma tasting room has an outdoor firepit as well.
VJB Cellars & Vineyards
Located in the village of Kenwood at the north end of the Sonoma Valley, VJB Cellars & Vineyards is a little slice of Italy without the airfare. Winter is the perfect time to take advantage of VJB’s no-reservations walk-in tastings in the sunny, art-filled main indoor tasting room, but if you’re looking for a truly remarkable (and cozy) experience, book a tented tasting on the outdoor “piazza.”
Jacuzzi Family Vineyards
It sure seems like Italian-style wineries know how to take care of wintertime guests. You’d be forgiven for thinking yourself in Tuscany as you pass through Jacuzzi’s rough-stone walls, take in the property’s sweeping views, and sample complex reds on its Italianate piazza. Wherever you imagine yourself to be while you’re here, rest assured you’ll be comfortable under the clear, heated tent that tops the outdoor tasting space from November through April.
Domaine Carneros
We’ll always prefer Sonoma, but we do give Napa credit when due. One of our favorite wineries on the “other side” is Domaine Carneros, whose stunning French-style chateau boasts a grand outdoor plaza that happens to be one of northern California’s best places to taste wine outdoors. For a warmer experience with equally amazing views, head inside to the glass-enclosed, passively heated sunroom.
Larson Family Winery
Nestled in the flats a few miles south of downtown Sonoma, Larson Family Winery lives up to its name. Kid and dog-friendly, with a rustic yet elegant vibe, Larson doesn’t take itself too seriously. But it does take great care of its guests, whatever the weather. Come winter, spread out and stay cozy under the long, well-heated outdoor shelter.
