We Call it “Winter”
by brendan roche
Lately, our local news outlets seem to have endless names for these winter rains. Gone are the lackluster “El Ninos” and “El Ninas” of years past, with “Atmospheric Rivers” and “Bomb Cyclones” now creating the buzz. No matter what phrase seems to draw the most ratings, us multi-generational Sonoma wine families still call it one thing: Winter. As many of you have either witnessed or heard, winter has started with a bang this year, unleashing desperately needed storms to quench our wine country’s drought thirst. Us vintners welcome these storms with great enthusiasm as they help to replenish our reservoirs and aquifers that are so vital in maintaining our world-famous appellation. We of course have seen some localized flooding which has caused some headaches and concern for those in wine country. Thankfully, being a multi-generational farm, we personally know the winter history of these lands, and whether a dry or very wet winter, we are always prepared.
Despite the deluge of storms passing over us, it is still just another normal winter here in the cellar and winery. We have or are preparing to bottle our 2021 reds and 2022 un-oaked varieties. Our tasting rooms are starting to come to life again as the post-holiday slow season winds down and we begin to welcome more visitors. The staff is busy with their wine-club shipment prep while also planning for our next club pick-up party February 24th-26th. We hope to see many of you there, as we showcase our 2022 Futures wines and current releases, all paired with light bites by Mara Roche and her team at Aunt Momo’s Catering.
Whether an atmospheric river, bomb cyclone, or just a winter day, we look forward to seeing you soon and hope you enjoy these wines in your first club package of 2023!
